October is Breast Cancer Awareness Month!

As many of you know, October is Breast Cancer Awareness Month. It’s important to be aware in how serious of a disease this can be and aside from skin cancer, breast cancer is the leading cause of death among American women. This type of cancer can be devastating for many but luckily it can be beaten by taking precaution early enough.

Here are some quick facts about breast cancer:

  • Studies show that about 1 in 8 women in the United States develop invasive breast cancer throughout their lifetime.
  • Just under 30% of cancers that are diagnosed in women are breast cancers.
  • African American women who are under 45 years old are more commonly diagnosed with breast cancer than other women.
  • Breast cancer risk almost doubles for someone if a close relative like a mother, daughter, or sister have been diagnosed with it.
  • Gender and age play a big role in risk factors for breast cancer.

Cancer affects many people in the world as well as the families of those that are diagnosed. It is important to remember that many factors in our daily life can increase the chances of anyone developing cancer. Here are some lifestyle changes that should be made to reduce the risk for the disease:

ltd7elrt4Alcohol: even a small amount of alcohol can increase your risk for cancer, try to limit your alcohol intake to a glass of wine on special occasions.

Quit smoking: doing this can improve your overall health and reduce your risk for other diseases as well.

Weight: obesity is a problem for many but not only is it bad for your health entirely, it can also increase your risk of developing breast cancer.

Physical Activity: exercising 150 minutes every week is recommended to improve health and reduce risk of disease.

Family history, genetic tendencies, and other factors can have an impact on everyone’s health. The best thing to do to make sure you are healthy is to talk with your doctor and see what he or she feels is best for your health and what testing they believe you should do. Remember, early detection is key!
