Distracted Driving Awareness Month

Distracted Driving Awareness Month

Ditch Distracted Driving

“Distracted Driving Awareness Month in April is a united effort to recognize the dangers of and eliminate preventable deaths from distracted driving.”*

We often forget that while vehicles add to our daily convenience and ability to travel further than a horse-and-buggy ever could, they are also 3 to 4-ton responsibilities that should carry more weight in our lives. As part of April’s Distracted Driving Awareness Month, the National Safety Council and other travel-related interested parties work together to remind drivers to pay attention to their current behaviors and see where every vehicle operator can focus on safer ways to drive without distractions.

Remember that distractions can range in how much attention they take away from your driving, but in every case, they should be avoided. A few examples:

  • Texting or answering phone calls
  • Using the internet
  • Unruly passengers
  • Items that have not been secured properly and roll around the floor boards
  • Changing the radio or engaging with dashboard controls

Some tips to reducing distractions:

  • Set your GPS, temperature controls, and playlist before you start driving
  • With an iPhone, activate Do Not Disturb While Driving to notify anyone who may text you that you’ll respond when you arrive at your destination
  • Ensure all loose items have been secured safely
  • Let passengers know that you’re taking everyone’s safety seriously and would like to keep distractions to a minimum

This quick video from MapFre Insurance covers the basic of distracted driving and how to actively engage in prevention to make everyone on the road safer:
